Ah yes, LEGOS!
I'm really not sure how it happened.
Maybe it was having a Lego birthday party for B over the summer that put them over the edge,
but my kids LOVE Legos.
This
project is a work in progress - and fortunately one that my OCD husband
has jumped on board with. This may seem like a tedious task but I'm
really hoping it pays off. As many parents know, once your kids get old
enough/interested in the large Lego sets, you're not talking a $20 gift
anymore.
Some of these sets are hundreds of dollars.
$$$$
$$$$
And to have the pieces all jumbled together at the end of the day is a source of extreme frustration.
(It's not just me, right?)
I posted on Facebook asking for advice on how others organize Legos and one friend said,
"It took me hours, but I just separated out the bigger sets and any set that has special pieces, which seems like the majority, and put them with their instructions in zip loc bags. They are all in a big tub, so [my son] can just grab one out and do the set. Kind of like getting a new one all over again! We also have a big box of pieces for when they want to build things on their own. That one gets dumped alot.

I cringe when I hear the sound!
Like my
husband says, if we had a quarter for every piece........
~~~~
Oh how I know that cringe!
But I like what she has to say about separating by sets - "like getting a new one all over again".
YES! Because my older son would put them together again and again if all the pieces were accessible.
So now we're on a mission.
We
started by separating them by color. And Kev Daddy put the people
parts back together (the best he could). Guns, swords, surf boards, swim
fins, masks, light sabers, etc. will go in an "accessories" bin.
(there are those shoe organizer bins again!)
And that's as far as we got so far... But it's a start!
Next
on the task list for the project is to start putting sets together
(yes, we've saved all the booklets cuz we're geeks like that...wonder if
I should file them in ABC order...)
Smaller sets will
most likely go in a baggie and put in a general bin. Once larger sets
are together, they can be stored in this (from Target):
I'll probably get all geeky and label them or something. Where's my Sharpie??
And then I love these bins from The Container Store
for all the "leftovers" (of which there are a ton) and can dumped and used for creative building.
And I promise I will (try) not to cringe when the "leftovers" bin gets dumped.
~~~~~~~
In the meantime, T put together the Lego City Airport all by himself!
He was so proud!
(Now when you're done playing with it, put it in the bin!!) :)
